How Building a Flickr Plugin Brought Us Traffic

By Elizabeth Jamieson

Do you take photos and upload them to Flickr? We build Wordpress memberships sites for clients, and recently someone approached us asking how he could easily display slideshows on the new site we'd built for him.

Our client had an account at Flickr where literally thousands of photos of his hotel were held, (he runs a wilderness hotel on Cape Breton Island in Canada). We searched wordpress.org for a good free Flickr plugin to use, but couldn't find one that combined all the features the client needed. He wanted unbranded slideshows that were easy to embed - and he wanted the ability to have more than one slideshow on a page, amongst other requirements.

In the end we built a plugin for his use ourselves and it is now freely available to anyone that wants it on the Wordpress site. (If you are interested search for Slickr Flickr in Google). We were surprised at how many people have appreciated the work we've put into it. At first it seemed thankless as it brings no income directly, but plugin development certainly works as a traffic magnet. The trick is to make sure the Wordpress plugin relates to your business.

In our case, creating a plugin has brought lots of traffic to our site that is relevant to our main business offering. However we're now changing direction and are considering doing more plugin development. If you are technical and can program, it's a great way to generate traffic to your web design related business.
